From the "Jeu de cauris" collection.
Cowrie shells are a spiritual element in most west african countries. The ancestors used them to read the future or to be in contact with the spirits. Until today, the practice is still observed. It is called " le jeu de cauris" (cowrie shells game). The player who has first received an initiation, throws the cowrie shells on a flat surface. The way they fall on the flat surface has a meaning. We say that the player reads the cowrie shells messages.
Cowrie shells were also used as money in the old african societies.
